We will learn about Timucuan culture, focusing on ways that local prehistoric people used fire to meet their daily needs. A hands-on experiment provides a bang as we use balloons (and water balloons!) to explore how prehistoric people could cook prior to the advent of pottery. For school-age kids and teens.
The difference between a tool and a weapon is a matter of intent. While this can be difficult to ascribe archaeologically, humans have used tools as weapons for hundreds of thousands of years. This presentation looks at the tool kits of prehistoric Timucuans and focuses on the atl-atl as the weapon of choice. Hands-on atl-atl demonstration available depending on time and outdoor space requirements. For teens and adults.
After touring all the new Art (Re)Public murals in Downtown Jacksonville, stop by the park to see local artists painting free-standing mural walls in Hemming Park. Enjoy music, food trucks, drinks and more.
In this exciting, hands-on workshop students will experiment with color and decoration while learning techniques for layering the ceramic surface. Screen printing, stamping, carving, sprigs, and underglaze application will all be explored. Students will have time to try the techniques on leather hard clay tiles in the morning before beginning an individual tile triptych in the afternoon. Some experience with clay is helpful, but not necessary.
Morning – Introduction and Overview
Demo – Preparing clay tiles, carving, texturing
Demo – surface techniques: screen printing, slips, stamps, underglazes, oh my!
Experiment with the various techniques demonstrated
Afternoon –
Design ideas for individual triptychs
Work on triptychs
Discussion – Glazing options and ideas for installing your creation post-firing.
